The progressive Mattei made it back to back wins, rounding out the Polytrack season at Ballarat with a dashing display stepping up to Benchmark 64 grade for the first time.

It is no easy feat for a young galloper to make the step up and win first time out of maiden grade, but Mattei was up to the challenge, running away with a 1.8length victory on September 22.

Mattei showed great versatility and maturity, able to sit in behind the speed and produce a race-winning burst through the field. It was noted after his maiden win that he had the benefit of an un-interrupted lead and gave a strong kick, so to see him be able to settle behind the speed and finish strong was very pleasing for Freedman and the team.

Freedman is keen to progress the son of Caravaggio through his grades and thinks he could potentially make a nice Moonee Valley Friday Night horse. “He has done a great job to win stepping out of maiden grade for the first time and he is a horse with a nice future. With the spring on our doorstep, he will benefit from a little freshen up and then attack the summer.”

Mattei is a graduate of the 2021 yearling crop for Freedman which includes the likes of Attrition, Vagrant and Ceerseven. There have (so far) been twelve starters from the 2021 crop that Freedman purchased for eight winners, plus another dual place getter. The future is very bright for these youngsters and we are very excited to see what level they can get to in next twelve months.

Shares are still remaining in some of the 2023 yearlings purchased by the Freedman team and we strongly encourage you to look at our horses available and get involved. “I couldn’t be happier with how our yearlings (now 2yo’s) have taken to the work and their education in the stable. We had a clear direction to buy athletic horses and all so far are shaping up.” View the horses available here;
