Changing Miss Excess’ training around a bit this time in has certainly done the trick with the five-year-old mare racing in career best form; first up racing away to an easy victory at Bendigo, covering ground when a gallant second at Sale en route to another smart win at Wangaratta on Monday.
From an inside gate able to obtain a nice position on the leaders back, Miss Excess travelled well throughout for Clayton Douglas who has been her regular partner this campaign.
Gaining a rails run turning, Miss Excess made full use of the space, giving a good kick and saluting by 1 1/4 lengths with plenty in hand.
“She had been drawing wide and it was good to see her closer to the speed today,” Mitchell said, looking forward to trying Miss Excess in slightly stronger company.
“She just bounced out and put herself into that position and travelled super,” Douglas enthused.
“I was really happy from the 600m, I thought it would need to be a good one to pick her up and once she quickened it was all over pretty quickly.”
“There is not much of her,” he continued, “but she is a trier.”
Mitchell was keen to praise the efforts of the jockey, noting that “he is certainly a rider with a lot of talent.”
