MITCH FREEDMAN

Mitch Freedman took a slight detour to his father and grandfather, but racing was always in his blood.

Freedman’s grandfather was a bookmaker and his father worked for him, meaning Mitch was always around horses and racing from a young age.

Mitch worked for some astute Victorian minds in the period before getting his licence, spending time with Kathryn and Craig Durden, Andrew Payne and Dan O’Sullivan before starting a lengthy period working for the Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Darren Weir.

Freedman graduated to become the foreman of Weir’s Warrnambool stable, which made him responsible for looking after many talented horses, including the dual Group 1 winner Platelet, top mare May’s Dream and the brilliant Puissance De Lune, who scored a memorable runaway win on Emirates Stakes day in 2012.

Freedman’s time with Weir showed him the benefits of beach work and varying routines for horses to leave them mentally and physically fresh throughout their preparations.

Switch Hit Hits Back

Switch Hit reversed his form back on top of the ground at Bendigo on Saturday October 18, dominating his rivals by 2.75 lengths. After an encouraging first up run at Hamilton, Switch Hit took his place at Warrnambool on a heavy 10 track but was disappointing on face value, beaten down the track. Freedman was happy to deem this as a ‘forget run’ and maintained faith that Switch Hit would be able to return to form back on top of the ground and keep improving into the preparation. With the blinkers reapplied, Switch Hit had a lovely run in transit, coiled up behind his rivals and exploded at the top of the straight, spacing the second horse and then a further five lengths back to the remainder of the field. Jake Duffy was very complimentary of the gelding and feels this win will be a great confidence booster going forward. Freedman said post-race “He is a well-travelled gelding, spending a lot of time across the border chasing the SA Rewards bonuses on offer to break his maiden. Whilst this was only a restricted 56 rated race, we think he has the capability to improve through the grades over the summer months.” With an eye to the future, and factoring in the horse will need to improve, Freedman said “perhaps this could be our Burrumbeet Cup horse.” Congratulations to the Mr Jim Lonsdale, Mr Frank Magnabosco and the connections of Switch Hit for their second win!

Ti Tree Lad Relishes The Wet At Mt Gambier

Ti Tree Lad delivered a strong performance at Mt Gambier on October 8, claiming his third career win in dominant fashion. The gelding relished the heavy track conditions, handling the going better than his rivals and proving far too strong late. Ti Tree Lad was scratched from the races on Sunday at Bendigo, with the team instead opting to sneak across the border, diligently following the weather forecast to their advantage. Freedman commented “He is a horse who is very effective on soft or heavy surfaces, which has been evident with each of his wins coming on a Soft 6 or worse. As the weather is improving through the Spring, we have been trying to place him as best we can to find a soft track and it was pleasing this plan could come off today.” Ti Tree Lad has not necessarily always been the punters pal, always running consistently without winning but Freedman has done a great job in turning his fortune, with two wins from his previous three starts. The six-year-old now has etching closer to the $100,000 prize money bracket, a great effort considering he has only won the three races. The victory marks the 10th win of the season for the Mitch Freedman stable, continuing a consistent run of form in the early Spring months. It has been a whirlwind fortnight for the stable, subject to the highs and lows of racing, yet the team are doing a fantastic job sticking to the process, trusting the systems in place and reaping the rewards along the way.

Oraqua Makes It Two On The Bounce

Progressive mare Oraqua continued her great run for the Freedman camp, putting together back-to-back wins at Geelong on October 2. The in-form mare took out a heat of the MRC Grand Handicap / VRC Grand Handicap, meaning she is now ballot exempt for the two upcoming finals over the spring. The form out of her dominant Donald maiden win was franked with the 3rd place-getter coming out and winning well at Tatura and could be a derby contender, Oraqua then stamped it for herself, making a commanding run from back in the field and running a fastest last 600, last 400 and last 200m splits in the race at Geelong to win by just under a length. Oraqua showed her versatility at Geelong in what proved to be a very different race shape, having to take a sit off midfield and sprint sharply to victory. A pleased Freedman said post race “We will continue to rise her through the grades and being ballot exempt from the two upcoming finals will be really exciting for the ownership group, to have a runner on some of the biggest days of the Spring Carnival is a great thrill for all.” Oraqua is an acceptor for MRC Grand Handicap Final this Saturday, October 11, where she will face a tougher field, but receives good weight relief with only 53kg on her back. “We will have a good look at that race in the coming 48 hours, before deciding if she takes her place or we keep her at a lower benchmark grade before she goes to the VRC Grand Handicap final on Melbourne Cup Day.” Freedman said. With momentum on her side and an improving record, Roll The Dice racing and their loyal ownership group look to be in for an exciting Spring Carnival!

Savitri Shines on Debut

Savitri made a winning start to her career at Warrnambool on September 22, dominating the race to win by 2.5lengths. The daughter of So You Think has displayed natural raw talent and the team have done a great job educating her and now in a position to reap the rewards of that work on race day. Freedman said “She’s got a bit to learn and she’s going to be better over further but she’s a very nice filly.” Partnered by Dean Yendall, Savitri left the gates very well, perhaps better than expected and ended up leading the race. Whilst not the plan, Yendall was able to get the filly to relax and come back underneath him, something the team have been working very hard to get right at home. Yendall said post-race “when I gave her a squeeze the head come up in the air, then with one around her tail she stretched out and galloped on.” Racing in the blue halves of Kia Ora Stud, Freedman said “It is a privilege to be in these colours, Kia Ora have a great record of breeding quality horses and hopefully we can reward them in the future.” Freedman was tossing up whether the preparation would be continuing after her debut run but she seems to have come through the race well. The initial thoughts will be to continue the preparation, which is exciting for all involved. She will likely go to a benchmark race against the older horses next and from there, decisions can be made as to whether she will contest some 3year-old races over the Spring.

Mr Shorty Travels Sweetly

One year to the day from breaking his maiden, Mr Shorty raced by Roll The Dice Racing adds a second career victory at Echuca when stepping out in trip for the first time over 2100 metres. Partnered by Will Price, Mr Shorty jumped away cleanly from a wide barrier and was allowed to stride forward to put himself on speed. The son of Puissance Du Lune settle into a nice rhythm throughout and responded quickly when asked for an effort. “He got into a lovely spot outside the lead, he always travelled really sweetly underneath me. I kept him off the rail a bit, the track didn’t play very nicely down to the inside.” Explains Will. “He cruised into it, he started to have a look when he hit the front. As a bit of pressure came, he pinned his ears back again and still won with a bit in hand.” Finding the middle of the track up the home straight, Mr Shorty looked to wander slightly when out in front on his own. Will Price did a superb job at keeping the momentum going to hit the line with a bit in hand late to win clear of the field by one and half lengths. Straight shooting spring for Skybird

Australia’s forgotten Group 1 sprinting mare Skybird has fully recovered from an untimely autumn injury and has another Flemington sprint feature as her main spring goal. Trainer Mitchell Freedman said on Monday that Skybird had returned to work at his Ballarat stables with an eye to running her primarily this spring in straight races at Flemington given her remarkable straight-track record where she has either won or placed in all three starts. “We haven’t made a plan that is set in concrete, but we are looking towards the Champions Sprint at Flemington,” Freedman said. “She handles the straight really well and she has shown she is up to that level. “We could potentially keep her to Flemington and run her in the two straight races leading into it, being the Bobbie Lewis and Gilgai (Stakes), or go to The Valley for some other big sprint races.” WATCH: Skybird’s Lightning win Group 1 sprints at The Valley such as the Moir Stakes (1000m) and Manikato Stakes (1200m) are being considered, but Freedman said the Champions Sprint (1200m) stands out as a target on final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Skybird blew away a quality field to land the prize at $31 in the G1 Black Caviar Lightning (1000m) at Flemington in February, but she wasn’t seen again for the rest of the campaign after coming out of the race with a pectoral muscle injury. While fellow G1-winning sprint mares such as Joliestar, Sunshine In Paris and emerging filly Lady Shenandoah were immediately put up as likely Everest contenders following their elite-level triumphs during the season, no such fuss was made about Skybird. She did not receive an invitation to Royal Ascot, as most Lightning winners do and so far, connections have received no approaches from slot-holders for October’s The Everest. “There’s been no interest so far but we’re not too worried,” Freedman said. “We’ve had a couple of team meetings with connections along the way and they have put absolute faith in the stable, so that’s given us confidence that the plans we have in place are the right ones. “She’s shown she us very good in a straight line and also very good around a corner, so those Flemington sprints will really suit her. “Last year she ran in the Golden Eagle (1500m), so the main thing this spring is she is being prepped as a sprinter now entirely.” Freedman said Skybird was close to a return for the Sangster in Adelaide in late April, but with so much at stake this spring, it was decided to spell her instead. “We got her back to a point where we were a month out from the Sangster and we had to make a decision there on whether we push on towards that race or give her a break,” he explained. “I just thought we’d lost too much ground in fitness and so it was best to turn her out. “If we were pushing towards the Sangster and she reinjured that muscle injury she had, then we would have been putting ourselves in an awkward spot to try and get her ready for the spring.” Racing.com News Desk

Tell Us Toll Rewards Hirst’s Patience

From the very beginning, long-time owner Mike Hirst has been a strong supporter of Mitch Freedman Racing, and today that loyalty was rewarded in the best way possible—Tell Us Toll broke her maiden in style at the home track in Ballarat. The daughter of Nostradamus has required plenty of patience from both Hirst and Freedman, enduring a few setbacks early in her career. But today, she was primed and ready—hard fit and perfectly placed for a confident ride by jockey Declan Bates. Now a five-year-old mare, Tell Us Toll has finished in the placings in five of her ten career starts. Today’s win was all class: jumping cleanly from barrier 2, Bates took her straight to the front, controlled the tempo, and never looked back—guiding her to an all-the-way victory by one and a half lengths. Trainer Mitch Freedman was pleased with the performance, noting: “She had jumped out well on the surface and won with a bit in hand today. Yoomee Wonder Swan Hill Carnival Winner

Lightly raced 4year-old Yoomee Wonder broke her maiden in style, winning the Fillies & Mares 1200m maiden on the first day of the Swan Hill carnival. Yoomee Wonder is a beautiful, big daughter of Flying Artie who was purchased out of the Inglis Classic sale, the same year as Skybird but has taken some time to put it all together. After an eye-catching 2nd at Murray Bridge last start, Yoomee Wonder was able to travel strongly in behind the speed, as the race came on, she put her rivals away in a matter of strides, flashing clear at the 200m mark in a classy maiden win. John Allen said post-race “she is a nice filly who looks like she will go on with the job. She was a bit green when she hit the front but will improve with more racing under her belt.” Freedman said post-race “We have always liked this filly. whilst we have had to wait until her 4year-old year to be at the races, she is well experienced now and hardened to go on with the job.” The Swan Hill carnival is one of the great Victorian carnivals and it’s always great to have a winner at carnival time. The Freedman team has had a winner at two of the past three carnivals and it was fantastic to continue this trend with Yoomee Wonder! Congratulations to all involved.
