You know what they say about a mare in form! Vagrant made it two metropolitan wins in a row on Saturday January 13 with a fabulous performance at Flemington.
Vagrant showcased her toughness once again, outclassing her rivals despite a difficult run in transit. From a wide gate, Vagrant travelled sweetly midfield but as they were approaching the 600m was flushed out four wide with no cover but the daughter of Pariah was too good, coming around her rivals and sustaining a long run down the famous Flemington straight to win by almost half a length.
Vagrant was ridden again by Beau Mertens, who continues to go from strength to strength when riding for the Freedman team in a partnership which has proved very fruitful over the Spring and Summer months. Mertens explained “I was exposed a little earlier (than I would like) but I was able to work her through her gears in the straight and she was really strong late.”
Very complimentary of his mare who has now earnt more than $200,000 in prize money, Freedman commented post race “she just has such a will to win, she pins the ears back and really has a go.”
Vagrant is already stakes placed as a 2yo and Freedman will be looking to add to her already impressive pedigree by chasing more black type racing down in Tasmania over the summer carnival. “The Vamos Stakes has got a big red circle around it” and looks to be a great target for her to hopefully improve on the stakes placing.
We will see Vagrant again at the races in early February before hitting Launceston with a head full of steam.
