Baltic Way is a young stayer on the rise, running in the first four seven out of his first eight starts, before breaking through as the first of three winners at Kerang. Ridden by Jake Duffy over 1800 metres, the son of So You Think put together a classy performance winning by one and a quarter lengths.
Baltic Way was purchased from the 2022 for Magic Millions sale for $90,000 and the team have taken a patient approach with him, allowing him to grow both physically and mentally over the preceding 18 months, before making his debut at Bendigo in February 2024. Baltic Way made a great impression on the race, albeit finishing fourth when he flew from the back of the field, running the fastest closing splits in the race. That set the tone for his first racing preparation, where he was a consistent performer but unfortunately could not get his elusive win.
Returning a bigger and stronger version of himself, Baltic Way has improved at each start this prep, culminating in a dominant maiden win. Freedman said post race “It was really pleasing to see him break the maiden today. We are confident that 1800m is short of his best, with him racing out to 2200m last preparation and ultimately was very unlucky not to win at Ararat (over that distance). Now as a more mature, more, complete product we expect that he will keep improving to 2000m and beyond.”
The silver lining of taking a few starts to break his maiden is that Baltic Way now has a rating of 58, meaning that he is eligible to run in restricted 0-58 grade racing. We are confident that he is well and truly capable of winning a race of this caliber and hope to see him back in the winner’s stall soon.
Congratulations to the ownership group of Baltic Way, another winner hand selected from the Magic Millions!
