French Savoy broke her maiden at her fourth career start at Horsham on Saturday April 19. The race was not without drama, with Rebel’s Idol running through the inside fence after going three strides and dislodging the rider.
Despite the eventful start, the field continued around the journey of the 1400m and French Savoy travelled sweetly throughout. As the race was coming on from the 600m, she moved up to the leader and had the race for the taking. As she hit the front, she was a little wayward, hitting the front a long way from home but gallantly fought off her rivals.
After long discussions with the jockeys and stewards, the maiden was declared a race, with French Savoy the winner.
Raced by Ken King Thoroughbreds, it was a pleasing result to get a result with this mare who began her career in neat fashion. French Savoy was an eye catching 2nd on debut at Ararat back in February, and made two more promising starts, building into a peak race at Horsham. “I was delighted to see this mare win in the Ken King Thoroughbred colours. Ken is a well accomplished breeder and syndicator and it was great to get a win on the board for the team.”
French Savoy’s win was also Alana Kelly’s first winner for the Mitch Freedman Racing team. Alana does a power of work for the stable in trackwork, jump outs/trials and the races. Alana has been ever-so close on a number of occasions, so it was fantastic to see her get a win on the board.
