Mattei added his third career victory on Friday September 20. Returning to the races this preparation at Pakenham, he was good first up, but then had a couple of runs where things didn’t quiet go his away. From wide barriers, to fast tempos and then very slow tempos, he has seen it all this preparation, all whilst building into his work.

A surprised Freedman said post-race “I thought he needed an extra run before he was fit and ready to fire with the blinkers back on, but we certainly take the win where we can get it!” Mattei’s victory came after an agonising week for the stable, with four second placings, including three beaten in a photo, so whilst a surprise to see him get there, a very welcome treat!

Mattei was ridden by talented apprentice Tom Prebble and was his first winner for the stable from only a handful of rides. No doubt the pair will take great confidence from that win and let’s hope they can continue their winning ways throughout the preparation.
