A dashing victory by Perdition at Swan Hill recorded Freedman’s 40th winner of the season, equalling his best ever result.
Perdition is a real character around the stables and leading up to the 40th, Freedman joked “who would have thought it would have been old mate Harry (Perdition) to bring up the record.” The son of Hellbent has been a work in progress for Freedman and he is very thankful for the patience of his ownership group. “He is a horse who at times can lack focus and application to the task at hand. When he is concentrating and putting himself in the race, he as shown ability to win races.” Freedman said post-race.
The win of Perdition at Swan Hill was the perfect example of what Freedman is talking about. He was under pressure from the 600m mark and looked like he was struggling to pick up coming to the corner, but then in the final 400m, he made a savage run to the line under the urgings of Will Gordon. “It was a great ride by Will, he really lifted him in the straight and ultimately his ride won the race.”
The 2023/2024 has been a breakout year for Freedman, including his maiden Group 1 win in the Toorak Handicap, two Group 2 victories and a Group 3 win, along with plenty of other success stories across all the grades. With six weeks to go in the season, Freedman’s strike rate would suggest that he can add to his tally and surpass his previous best, continuing the upward trajectory the stable is heading.
