She was rising in class, up a little in weight, up a bit in distance.
But none of that was able to impede Lucky Wick as she raced away to an easy victory at Sandown on Wednesday – her third win in a row!
Sent out at nice odds despite the dominance of her two previous wins in a BM58 at Hamilton and a BM64 at Geelong, Lucky Wick was tackling BM70 level for the first time and she handled the tougher test with aplomb.
Always travelling sweetly, Lucky Wick enjoyed a good run off pace and was cruising coming to the turn. A little patience was required with the mare known in the past to have been a little lackadaisical once getting to the lead… but her regular partner Jarrod Fry has a good relationship with her and knows just when to get her going!
“I was mindful about pushing the button too early, I just had to wait, wait,” he said.
“But once I put her to the test she put them away nicely.”
Very nicely in fact, her winning margin an impressive 1 1/4 lengths.
“She has been getting better with each run,” Fry said. “It has taken a while to work her out, we have been working on getting her to relax. She has come a long way since she first came to the stable… she is in really good form.”
“She has been known to get her head up a bit,” Mitch Freedman said – “but Jarrod has done a great job with her and he presented her into the race at just the right time.”
Freedman is confident that there is more to come for the former South Australian trained home-bred for a very proud Ron Turnbull – “everything she has done at home suggests that she can race in better grade and get more ground,” he said.
Lucky Wick has had just four runs for us and it has been exciting witnessing her improvement as she has risen through the classes. With her love of heavy ground we hope there is plenty more rain about over the winter months!
