Mitch Freedman started 2022 in style with a race to race double at Terang. The consistent Serene Moon broke her maiden after a third and second placing this preparation, before Patrika Gold produced an eye-catching debut, winning by 4.5 lengths eased down. Both horses showed scintillating gate speed, bouncing to the front and leading from pillar to post in their respective 1200m maidens.

Both Serene Moon and Patrika Gold are sired by one of Freedman’s favourites, Puissance De Lune. Freedman continues to have fantastic success with the sire and would have to be considered the best trainer for the Puissance De Lune progeny, including three of his five stakes horses.

Following the Terang double, Freedman said “Both horses have nice upside, Serene Moon was a cracking yearling and has shown good ability at home. Patrika Gold has required patience but has a bright future and will step out in distance when she learns to cope with the pressures of racing.”

The win of Patrika Gold was extra sweet, as the 4yo mare has had her share of niggles and setbacks throughout her career to date. It was pleasing to see the result for owner/breeder Paul Sturt who has been so patient and entrusting in Freedman’s care for his promising mare. Both daughters of Puissance De Lune look to have excited futures ahead of them and we look forward to following them in 2022.

Since the start of November, Freedman has had 35 runners for 6 wins, striking at 17%. On paper, this is a great strike rate and shows the stable is going well, however in addition to the 6 wins have been 14 placings, many of which are less than a length. Thus meaning the Freedman camp has been running at a win/place strike rate of 57% – flying!

Let’s hope 2022 brings a new stroke of luck, turning those close placings for victories in what is looming as a fruitful year for Freedman and his loyal team of owners.
