Whilst he may not have been first past the post, Whitson was awarded his maiden win in the stewards room following a gutsy display at Terang.
Whitson has contested some strong races throughout his career and its hard to fathom that it has taken him this long to break his maiden, but nevertheless he is on the board! Winning in this fashion tells a real story about Whitson’s development and maturity. Freedman was confident that the interference was enough to justify a protest and paid full credit to his horse “I think four or five starts ago, he would have weakened when under that pressure, so it is a real credit to the horse and shows how far he has come with some racing under his belt.” Freedman said post race.
With an eye now to the future, although Whitson certainly has tested the patience of his connections at stages, Freedman is confident that he can go on with the job and continue to rise in the ratings. “I have confidence that this horse will go on with it, I still think he is a chance. It’s taken us longer than we would have liked to get here, chasing some bigger prize money in stronger maidens but feel that he is well and truly capable of winning a few more along the way.”
Whitson is going to be eligible for restricted 0-58 races going forward and the team are confident he should be able to win a race of that strength very quickly, hopefully this time by putting his head past the post first!
Congratulations to the connections of Whitson, the first of many to come.
