Attrition ridden by Jarrod Fry wins the Harvest HR Handicap at Geelong Racecourse on January 29, 2023.

Autumn Awaits Attrition

Freedman’s promising three-year-old colt was an impressive winner at Geelong on Sunday January 29, off the back of a dazzling performance at Sandown on January 11 when breaking his maiden under Jarrod Fry.

Stringing together his second victory in a row, the son of Churchill looks primed and ready for an Autumn assault. He’s returned a stronger, more furnished product after two unlucky runs in his two-year old season, as a three-year-old Attrition burned clear of his rivals with dominance.

Taking on the older horses and stepping out of maiden grade, Attrition was sent around a red-hot $1.45 favourite and was a painless watch, winning eased down by 4lengths. Freedman was thrilled by the scintillating performance of his 3yo colt, “He had to come here and take on the battle harden horses” but his class prevailed. “He is just such an athlete, we have some Autumn targets for him and we are excited to see where he can get to in the next couple of runs.”

Post-race Jarrod Fry felt Attrition didn’t love the soft track and will improve back on top of the ground, yet “the cream always rises to the top.” Freedman has some Autumn targets for the colt, which will likely see him step out in stakes grade for his next race.

Attrition is arguably the most promising Southern hemisphere bred son of Coolmore’s Champion miler, Churchill. From the first time Freedman saw him he noted “He’s got a lot of Galileo about him.” Churchill is already the sire of multiple stakes winners in the Northern-hemisphere including two Group 1 winners.

Attrition’s victories has turned heads within the Racing Community in what could be the uncovering of a very promising horse to follow into the Autumn. Post-race, Freedman expressed his gratitude for the faithful owners in Attrition, who races in the colours of Colin McKenna’s Halo Racing and includes some of Freedman’s greatest supporters, McGrath Racing, Mr Paul Gorey and the Norton Family.

Freedman is looking forward to the next period of his stable, as many more of his recent purchases hit the track. “We have some exciting unraced stock that will be stepping out in the next month or two and I am confident we have some nice horses to follow.” With the yearling sales in full swing, Freedman is working diligently to find his next star. Freedman has had great success in the sales ring, including purchasing the likes of Spirit Of Gaylard (stakes winner), Vagrant (stakes placed) & Attrition, Bravo Tango, Kaliuwaa Falls, Legion of Merit to name a small selection.

Congratulations to the ownership group and join us in wishing them all the best for an exciting ride!

Just A Theory ridden by Jarrod Fry wins the Party with the Ponies 4YO+ Maiden Plate at Hamilton on December 06, 2022.

Just A Theory continues her rich vein of form

Four-year-old mare Just A Theory by Into Mischief has started to show some maturity in her racing, which is bringing her successful results. She has been a consistent mare placing in seven of her ten career starts, it was a great thrill to see her salute in the Hirst family colours at Hamilton.

With a small field and a difficult barrier to contend with, in-form jockey Jarrod Fry quickly assessed his options and opted to take up the running. Just A Theory had an easy time of it in front and quickened down the hill, at which point Fry felt she would be awfully hard to beat. The pair have a good association, with Fry riding both of her career victories.

Freedman was pleased to progress through Benchmark 58 grade and feels his mare may be one to follow through the grades. Freedman explains, “It’s been pleasing to watch on as she has been learning her craft, she has raced super consistent and looks like a crack a metropolitan class is within her grasp”.

The stable is up and firing to start 2023, with three winners from the previous ten starters. “We have been working hard at home, a lot of horses at the jump outs and un-raced horses ready to go to the races, so we are really looking forward to the Autumn ahead.” There is no better time to get involved with our in-form team, keep an eye out on our website and social media for yearlings that are available this sales season.

Belle Et Riche gives Freedman a second metropolitan winner for 2023

Belle Et Riche ridden by Jordan Childs wins the Brew Living Legends Plate at Flemington Racecourse on January 14, 2023

From only nine career starts the daughter of Rich Enuff added a well-deserved third career victory when winning at Flemington on January 14. She has been in fantastic form since kicking off her campaign on Ballarat Cup Day, but unfortunately has had to contend with some wide barrier draws and difficult luck in running.

Fortunately, Belle Et Riche is very versatile and can be ridden to suit each scenario, each time giving her all, making her owners and the stable proud. Finally on Saturday, the ‘barrier gods’ were on our side, and from gate 3 she settled one out one back with Jordan Childs riding with timing to perfection.

Childs said post-race the intention was “to be positive out of the gates, have an uninterrupted run from the one-one position and the horse was able to do the rest,” glowing in praise for Freedman and his promising mare.

Belle Et Riche steps out in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes this weekend at Sandown and has some promising black type opportunities throughout the Autumn.

Congratulations to Rod Groves and his ownership group on a fantastic victory, may there be plenty more to come!

Owner of the month Felicity Hawker

Birthday Suit ridden by Jake Noonan wins the The Haymarket Fillies and Mares
Maiden Plate at Sportsbet-Ballarat Synthetic Racecourse on July 05, 2022

Tizso Fab (Wicked)

Baltic Way (Protest)

As a kid, Felicity Hawker was horse mad. She fondly recalls travelling around the country in the float with her dad and her two younger sisters where they grew up in Tasmania.

Hawker explains, “As a family there probably wasn’t much we didn’t compete in, and there’s probably not many events that one of us didn’t win. The three of us won the state championship together, that was pretty special”.

In 1970 Hawker went on to study medicine in for six years, as time went on she had little to no time for her horses as work got busy. She made the hard decision to sideline the horses, and focus on her work. Later on Hawker endeavoured into race horse ownership, instead of coming back as a rider.

Having only been involved in the horse racing industry over the last ten years or so, her current role seems very sitting as a race day Doctor. It was a trip to the yearling sales with Monash University that sparked an interest, where Hawker later bought shares in two fillies from that sale.

Throughout her journey of horse ownership, there’s one horse Hawker was quick to mention. Geodesic, who won four races from only 37 career starts, three of which were back to back.

“He was trained at Flemington and he was a bit flighty, the only time he got out of the stable was when he was racing. We felt a change of scenery would do him the world of good, and decided to send him to Warrnambool where Mitch was training at the time. They’re on and off the truck regularly going to the beach, the track and that really suited the horse. It turned him around, he won three in a row after that”.

Currently Hawker has shares three horses with MF Racing including winner Birthday Suit, unraced Tizso Fab and Baltic Way. If there was one race Hawker could win, it would be the Melbourne Cup. But she noted there are lots of great races around now, worth good prize money.

Hawker lives by the mantra that when you do something, it should feel like you’re making a difference. “The day I feel like I’m not, then I need to be doing something else”.

Best of luck with your horse’s Felicity, thank you for your time we really appreciate it!

Staff pick of the month

Cara von Brandenstein Pick of the Month is the striking son of Dissident, Itsbruce (race name) who goes by stable name “Bruce”.

Brandenstein recently came on board at MFRacing, she offered, “he’s a bit of a spunk. He’s very handsome in black, I just want to take him home. My son’s favourite super hero is Batman, and well he’s played by Bruce Wayne so it seems fitting”.

“I have an older riding horse at home who is nearing retirement, Bruce is so gentle in the box and great to cuddle. I’ve put my name down to take him after racing, if that’s an option. I would offer him a life long home”.

Cara comes from a back ground of polo horses, her passion for our four-legged friends is evident. Cara is a breath of fresh air, who lightens up those dull mornings. No job is too big for Cara, she’s always happy to pitch in and is a real team player. Thanks for your time Cara!
