Birthday Suit Streaks Away

Birthday Suit ridden by Liam Riordan wins the Midfield Group Handicap at Terang Racecourse on February 26

Progressive mare Birthday Suit was too slick for her opponents on Sunday at Terang, when winning by two and a quarter lengths.

Birthday Suit is a very consistent horse, who has picked up a cheque in eleven of her twelve starts and always puts in one hundred percent. The daughter of Better Than Ready took some time to break her maiden, which resulted in her having a low rating and being eligible for 0-58 racing and she proved on Sunday that she is superior to the class.

Birthday Suit’s victory broke a run of placings for team Freedman, with nine of his twenty-one starters for the month finishing in the minor money. Now going to a rating of 61, we feel Birthday Suit is in for a very enjoyable campaign and can string together a few victories in the Autumn and early winter months.

On a heavy track at Terang, Freedman was unsure how Birthday Suit would get through the ground, having placed twice on soft ground to begin her career. “She profiled well to be winning third-up in that grade. The wet track threw a spanner in the works, but it was great to see her win for her local connections”

A large percentage of Birthday Suit’s owners are based in the South West and ventured to Terang to be there for her win. Reports from the Terang Racing Committee are they were glad it was Race 8 not Race 1 otherwise it could have been a very, very large day for connections!

The ever-consistent Belle Et Riche

Jordan Childs returns to the mounting yard on Belle Et Riche after winning the Ladbrokes Punter Assist Handicap at Ladbrokes Park Lakeside Racecourse on May 22, 2022

The ever-consistent Belle Et Riche added some quality black type to her pedigree, running a gallant second placing in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine on Saturday February 4. From only ten career starts, Belle Et Riche, a daughter of Woodside Park stallion Rich Enuff, has earnt $266,200 in prize money and has risen through the grades following a great summer campaign.

Belle Et Riche was beaten 0.4 lengths to her summer rival, Wrote To Arataki, whom she has faced three times. Belle Et Riche was coming back to 1300m following a short freshen up at Fulmen Park and was fantastic in her performance, albeit without winning.

“Belle Et Riche was very honest, putting in another consistent run. She was well-ridden and battled strongly to the line.” Said Mitch Freedman.

Freedman has done an incredible job with the mare, who has more stakes ambitions in store both in Victoria and potentially in Tasmania this Autumn. Whilst a stakes placing is a fantastic achievement, we strongly believe this mare deserves a stakes victory to go with it.

Good luck to Mr Rod Groves and his ownership group for the remainder of her Autumn campaign.

For everything you look for in a sprinting colt, here’s your ticket.

“We’re here to buy athletes and he fits the bill perfectly” – Mitch Freedman

Cosmic Force was a phenomenal two-year-old stakes winner, the biggest victory of this millennium when winning by over seven lengths!

The star colt trained on to be a stakes winning three-year-old beating some of the best colts of his age, “when he was on song he was dynamic. He was very, very good.” Explains co-trainer Peter Snowden.

The Cosmic Force x Sensible Lady looks a superb athlete and gives the impression he will be an early runner. Bred by Group 1 producers Gooree Park Mudgee, out of a multiple stakes winning mare, this colt is everything you look for in a two-year-old!

Ceerseven (NZ) wins the Stavely Park Merino Stud Maiden Plate at Ararat Racecourse on February 5

Ceerseven Scores on Debut

How about the first-start win of Ceerseven yesterday at Ararat! The 3yo son of Complacent was simply dominant over 1300m, clearing away for a 3length victory.
Ceerseven is named after soccer superstar Christiano Ronaldo, who famously wears number seven. The idea for his name come from part owner Rachel Forrest, who’s ‘dream job’ would be to name horses. Ceerseven’s half brother, Fa Fa, is a six-time winner in Hong Kong and is named after another soccer player, Fafa Picault, therefore Forrest thought it would be right to keep the tradition going within the family.
Freedman was very pleased with the son of Complacent and feels he is only going to continue to improve with time and racing. He should improve out to a mile and even further during his career, which is very exciting for Freedman and the ownership group that he put in such a great performance yesterday over 1300m. With the Autumn on our doorstep, there could perhaps be some metropolitan targets for Ceerseven in 3yo restricted grade, depending on how he comes through his victory.
From his first day at the stable, Freedman loved the athleticism and free movement of the gelding and felt he was a nice horse in the making. “He has always had a good action on him. I liked him as a yearling because the dam-sire is Elnadim and I previously associated with a nice horse, the Group 1 winning Culminate, who has a similar breeding to Ceerseven. When I saw him for the first time, he was a neat, athletic type very similar to Culminate.”
Ceerseven adds to Freedman’s impressive win record with purchases out of the Karaka sales. His most recent purchase is a lovely Almanzor filly, a beautiful ‘Oaks’ style of filly and we can’t wait to see her in the stables. Shares are still available to get involved in the winning formula!

Owner of the month Baden Boan

Birthday Suit wins the Midfield Group Handicap at Terang Racecourse on February 26, 2023 in Terang

Ostile (Patrick)

Baltic Way (Protest)

Sprinter or stayer?
Doesn’t matter, as long as they win.

Filly or colt?
Filly, because you have the option to breed or sell them as a broodmare as you wish.

Favourite race horse?
Well it would have to be Black Caviar, she was in a league of her own. I’ve never seen a horse like it.

What’s a race you’d love to win, and why?
I’d love to win a race on Derby Day, any one of them.

Baden Boan believes smaller percentages shared across a number of horses is best, rather than putting all your eggs in one basket as an owner.

“My feeling would be it’s better to take a smaller share in a number of horses, rather than a big share in one horse”, said Baden who’s followed horse racing for around 55 years.

“It’s a magnificent thrill when they win”, explains Baden as he reflects over his ownership experience.

“The best horse we’ve been involved in was a horse called Ascorbic who won the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes and the Group 3 Quezette Stakes, and the horse didn’t cost the earth. That’s going back around 25 to 30 years ago”.

“The first horse I owned was called Brave Lead, I still remember going to the races I think they were at Sandown. Both Ascorbic and Brave Lead were running on the same day, Ascorbic won the Cassette Stakes and Brave Lead placed third in the Listed race so that was a good day”.

The first horse Baden had in training with Mitch was called Hard Up by Hard Spun, the introduction to the stable was through a friend. “When we were naming the horses, we wanted to be risky and call it Hard Won. We didn’t think that would get up, we thought about calling it a few other things too”, he chuckles. Baden now has five horses in training with Mitch, one who we hope lives up to his derby dream.

We hope your derby dreams become reality, thanks for your time Baden!

Staff pick of the month

Colin with his favourite racehorse Attrition, and there’s a few more reasons to like the horse other than his ability.

“I just like a horse whose got a bit of spirit, I think all athletes are the same. They have to have that bit of fight and competitive side that sets them apart”, said Colin.

“He’s a bit cheeky, I like that about him”.
